The United Nations is looking to hire university students -graduates & undergraduates- as Interns in the position of Conference Services Officers within the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia Department. The duration of an ESCWA internship is normally two months on a full time basis - this may be exceptionally extended for a maximum period of six months. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the respective Division.  

Interns are not paid and are responsible for all expenses related to the internship. ESCWA accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon awarding an internship, candidates will be required to sign a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of the conditions of service.  

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. This internship is located within the Conference Services Section (CSS), Administrative Services Division (ASD) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The intern reports directly to the Chief, CSS and will be under the overall supervision of the Director of ASD.

Responsibilities 

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

1. Assistance in drafting and preparing press releases
2. Assistance in reporting for news stories
3. Attending and summarizing conferences and meetings
4. Taking photos at conferences and events
5. Supporting the production of audiovisual multimedia content
6. Preparing posts for social media platforms
7. Evaluating social media analytics and trends
8. Researching issues related to the work of the Commission
9. Media analysis
10. Assisting in other ad-hoc activities as instructed

Education, Skills & Experience

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Program, the following conditions must be met:

  • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
    1. Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher)
    2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent)
    3. Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views
  • Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Arabic is also a working language of ESCWA. For this post, fluency in written and spoken English is required. Fluency in written and spoken Arabic is desirable. Knowledge of French is an asset.
  • Work Experience: Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the program.
