The Katara Prize for Arabic Fiction is an annual award launched by the Cultural Village Foundation - Katara in early 2014, which is managed, supported, and fully supervised by an award management committee appointed for this purpose.
The award aims to consolidate the presence of Arab novels distinguished by Arabs and internationally, and to encourage and appreciate the creative Arab novelists to move towards greater horizons of creativity and excellence, which will raise the level of interest in reading the Arabic novel and increasing cultural and cognitive awareness. The Katara Award is committed to uphold the values of independence, transparency, and integrity during the selection process, Katara also translates the work of the winners into English and French, publishes and markets unpublished novels, the Award allows publishing houses and novelists to compete head to head.
General Terms & Conditions
- Only works written in Arabic are accepted, works translated from other languages or borrowed from global works are not accepted.
- The language of the literary work must adhere to linguistic rules, otherwise the work will be excluded.
- Works that have already won other prizes are not accepted.
- The candidate must be alive.
- The novelist or researcher is not entitled to participate in more than one literary work in this competition.
- The deadline for receiving applications and literary works is on December 31st, 2018. Applications submitted after this deadline will not be accepted.
Categories of Katara Prize
- Published Arabic Novels: Five prizes will be presented to the winners through their participation or the nominations of the publishing houses. Each published text will be awarded a prize of $60,000 USD and the total prize for this category will be $300,000 USD.
- Unpublished Arabic Novels: Five awards for unpublished novels, each worth $30,000 USD, with a total prize amount of $150,000 USD for this category.
- Studies (Research, Evaluation and Literary Criticism): Five prizes for unpublished studies, each is worth $15,000 USD, with a total prize amount of $75,000 USD for this category.
- Unpublished Boys' Novels: Five prizes for unpublished boys' novels, each is worth $10,000 USD, with a total of $50,000 USD for this category.
The Katara Comittee Will Award the Winning Novels & Studies With:
- Printing and marketing the winning novels that have not been published.
- Translating and printing of winning novels into English and French.
- Printing and marketing of winning studies.
- Printing and marketing the boys' unpublished novels.
