Opportunity description

Projects Abroad is offering a volunteer opportunity to protect sea turtles in Mexico. You will work with conservation experts to protect endangered species such as the Olive Ridley Turtle, and you will conduct research and collect scientific data that will later be used by researchers across the Americas. You'll also help move turtle nests to sheltered enclosures, then release their young safely into the ocean. You'll enjoy living near a beautiful black sand beach in Coyotlán, where you'll stay in shared accommodations near the town center and the beach. You will volunteer for this opportunity for at least one week during the period from June to September.

Duties & responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

  • Protecting sea turtles, ensuring the survival of endangered sea turtle species, and preserving the environmental well-being of the region.
  • Help in preserving the coasts and monitor their wildlife.
  • Scientific data collection for scientists and local government.
  • Work to tackle coastal erosion by planting mangroves. Mangroves not only protect coasts from soil erosion, but also provide a home for marine life, and help combat climate change.

Eligibility criteria

  • This opportunity will suit you if you have a keen interest in marine conservation and would like to experience an outdoor adventure.
  • In this opportunity, you will spend your days patrolling the black sand beaches, searching for turtle nests, carefully transporting their eggs to more protected areas, then releasing their young and watching them crawl over the sand into the ocean, slowly sailing around a lake, and taking notes on different animals and birds. that you see for scholars.
  • You will get the chance to hone various soft skills such as communication and adapting to different environments, which you can apply to any career you pursue.
  • You don't need previous experience to join this opportunity as you'll be supervised by experts, and Project Abroad staff will always be available to give you guidance and advice.
