Rhodes Trust in partnership with the Saïd Foundation for Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine offers two scholarships to students who wish to complete their postgraduate studies in the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. The Rhodes Scholarship program is the oldest (established in 1903), and perhaps the most prestigious and international scholarship program in the world. Administered by the Rhodes Trust in Oxford, the program covers more than 100 fully-funded scholarships each year for postgraduate study for young leaders of outstanding intellect and character who are motivated to engage with global challenges, commit to the service of others and show promise of becoming value-driven principled leaders in the future. 

Selection Criteria:

The selection committee is looking for the following:

  • Academic excellence (e.g. First Class Honors or GPA of minimum 3.7 out of 4 or equivalent)
  • Energy to use talents to the full (as demonstrated by mastery in areas such as sports, music, debate, theatre, and artistic pursuits, particularly where team work is involved)
  • Truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship
  • Moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in your fellow human beings


Applicants must:

  • Be either Syrian, Jordanian, Lebanese or Palestinian
  • Have received at least 5 years of education in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon or the West Bank between the age of 8-22 years
  • Have reached 19 years and not have passed 27 years on October 1, 2020, which means applicants must have been born after September 30, 1993 and on or before October 1, 2001
  • Have completed (or will have completed by June 30, 2020 an undergraduate degree from a college or a university (normally a Bachelor’s) to a sufficiently high standard to be admitted to postgraduate study at the University of Oxford
  • Applicant must have a sufficiently high standard of English and have met -by the application deadline the English language proficiency requirements for IELTS / TOEFL (at the Higher Level listed) of the University of Oxford and the UKVI.

Required Documents:

  • Birth certificate confirming the age
  • A copy of a valid passport, refugee travel document or national identity card. Holders of Syrian passports that expired after 2011 may be considered if the expired passport or evidence of sustained residency in Syria up to 2011 can be provided
  • An official transcript from the college or university at which the applicant is studying, or have studied, showing grades achieved (to date).
  • Copy of high school marks and graduation certificate
  • Evidence of English language proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS)
  • CV without including a photograph (two pages maximum)
  • A color photograph (JPG format)
  • A personal statement (no more than 1,000 words) that should include answers to: Who are you? What matters to you? What are you hoping to do in the world?
  • At least 3 of academic referees who can comment in detail on the applicant academic ability and how well they think he would fare at Oxford
