Opportunity description

Every two to three months, Mongabay.com announce the availability of a new Special Reporting Initiative (SRI) for a given theme. A series of high-quality articles on a particular environmental issue is published in each (SRI).

The new initiative was launched under the title "Conservation Solutions". The importance of this program comes from the importance of nature conservation, which has recently been exposed to many problems such as the destruction of natural places and species that are close to extinction, climate change, pollution, and others. This project aims to find and adopt solutions to environmental challenges on a large scale, as well as to assist interested groups who may lack access to these solutions and information with available tools and strategies.

Conditions:

  • Stories will look at successful projects or initiatives and examine which components (e.g. project design, consultative process, pre-conditions, tools, collaboration, monitoring, and evaluation, etc.) enabled the effort to meet its goals.
  • Stories about efforts to address, or even resolve, conservation problems that can be adapted or replicated elsewhere by providing insights that groups facing similar challenges can actually use.
  • Each story will be approximately 800 to 1,500 words in length and should include quotes from at least 2 or 3 original interviews. Also, he will provide 5-10 publishable photos (either original, provided by those interviewed, or found free of copyright restrictions online).

Value:

The winner is awarded $ 12,000 honorarium and up to $ 3,000 for travel, research, and reporting.

Selection Criteria:

Applications will be reviewed by an independent selection panel that consists of 4-5 journalists, academics and experts in the field of the case. Reports are judged according to the following criteria:

  • The professionalism of the application (spelling, grammar, organization, etc.).
  • The creativity and originality of the pitch.
  • The potential of publishing in external media outlets.
  • Quality of previous work.

After Winning:

  • The winner is expected to conduct research and travel activities within two months and then write reports within two months.
  • The winning journalist will be expected to produce more than 5,000 words (most likely in 5-6 articles) to be published on mongabay site.
  • Articles will be published on Mongabay under the Creative Commons license and can, therefore, be shared on other websites or cited and used in books, videos, and other publishing methods.
