Green Stories writing competition is now available for creative writers all over the world who want to participate in the Adult Novel competition. Green Stories writing competitions are a series of free writing competitions across various formats to solicit stories that showcase what a sustainable society might look like.
About the Competition:-
- Just as some books/films produce place products, Green Stories aims to ‘product place’ sustainable attitudes, behaviours, products and policies.
- The story doesn’t have to be specifically about climate change or catastrophic shortages, it can be any kind of genre – rom com, crime drama, legal drama, children’s book, sci fi etc. as long as it showcases sustainable technologies, practices, products or ideas in the background.

- Half price manuscript appraisal (worth £300-400) for top three entries by established literary consultancy Daniel Goldsmith. Plus cash prize (tbc shortly).
- Daniel Goldsmith Associates are literary and publishing consultants. They work with writers to improve their writing, offer rights and contracts management services to literary agents and help new publishers to start up.
- Helping you achieve success: Green Stories have an agreement from Peter Cox from the literary agency, Redhammer Management, to provide a one to one mentoring session with the winners (at their office in London or virtual meeting).
Eligibility criteria
- This competition is open to all and free to enter.
- All submissions must be in English and conform to the green stories criteria of showing a positive vision of what a sustainable society might look like or in some way smuggling in green solutions/policies/characters in the context of an otherwise mainstream story.
- There are two key priorities in the submitted works:
- Story telling ability – the story should be engaging.
- Incorporate green solutions e.g. by
- Showcasing what a green/sustainable society might look like and/or how we might get there.
- Smuggling green solutions into a story aimed at mainstream readers – this can be quite subtle.
- Using positive role models
Submissions Specifications:-
- Length: Typically novels are 70,000 – 100, 000 words. Submit three chapters (minimum of 4000 words, maximum 10,000 words) as one document that must include the following:
- The first chapter.
- Another chapter that best showcases how your novel meets the green stories criteria.
- A third chapter (suggest the final chapter if possible).
- A one-page synopsis (name and contact details optional – Can be identified via submission page).
- You can submit more than three chapters if you need to, in order to make up to 4,000 words. You may then be asked for the full novel from the best entries.

Green Stories writing competitions are a series of free writing competitions across various formats to solicit stories that showcase what a sustainable society might look like. Open to all. Entries must be in English and unpublished. The competitions are organised by the University of Southampton. Green Stories Competitions’ mission is to create a cultural body of work that entertains and informs about green solutions, inspires green behaviour and raises awareness of the necessary transformations towards a sustainable economy.
