FRASCAL offers 11 doctoral positions and 1 postdoctoral position in a number of projects to holders of a master’s or a PhD degree in Science or in Mathematics starting in January 1, 2019 in Germany. The Research Training Group (RTG) has financial resources with which it finances gender mainstreaming, such as courses that increase the career chances of young female researchers or measures for improving the compatibility of work and family life. With one application form, applicants may participate in up to 3 doctoral projects within FRASCAL.
Eligibility criteria:
[1] For the doctoral position (Project P1 to P11), applicants must either hold or are about to obtain a Master in Science degree in Mechanics, Material Sciences, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, or in a closely related field
[2] For the postdoctoral position (Project P12), applicants must either hold or are about to obtain a doctoral degree in Mechanics, Material Sciences, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, or in a closely related field
[3] Applicants must be proficient in the English language, and knowledge of the German language is an advantage
[4] Applicants must have strong interpersonal skills and be able to work in a team
[5] Women are explicitly encouraged to apply
[6] Handicapped persons with the same professional qualification and personal suitability for the advertised job are treated preferentially
[7] Applicants will be invited to a two-day recruitment symposium, which will be held on October 11 and 12, in which each applicant is expected to give a 10 minute presentation and will afterwards be interviewed by the prospective mentors

FRASCAL offers successful applicants the possibility to perform research within an interdisciplinary team in a highly innovative and active research area comprising Mechanics, Material sciences, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics. Two principal advisors will guide applicants as mentors through the research project. In addition to the research program, there will also be mini lectures, soft skills training and Research Training Group seminars, as well as retreats, alumni, visitor workshops and mini symposia. Remuneration is at E 13 TV-L (full-time) according to the German public service salary scale.
About FRASCAL:
The new Research Training Group GRK 2423 “Fracture across Scales – FRASCAL”, which is funded by the German Science Foundation and hosted at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), will start on January 1st, 2019. It aims to improve understanding of fracture in brittle heterogeneous materials by developing simulation methods.
