Opportunity description

Women’s Studio Workshop invites artists from anywhere in the world to apply for the Ceramics Internship from October 2019 to March 2020 in New York in the United States. You’ll work directly with the Ceramics Studio Manager, preparing for the annual Chili Bowl Fiesta fundraiser. During this mid-winter event, Women’s Studio Workshop warms up the local community by presenting over 900 handmade bowls, mugs, and tumblers for sale. You’ll work on a production scale, creating between 300 and 600 vessels, depending on the studio’s need. After the Fiesta is over, you may also teach one of the month-long spring ceramics courses. Interns work 40 hours/week, generally Monday through Friday, 9:00-5:00, but the schedule may change to accommodate the Workshop’s programming. Outside working hours, and with respect to residents’ work, interns have unlimited studio access.

Responsibilities:

  1. Wheel-throwing and hand-building.
  2. Glazing and surface design.
  3. Loading and firing electric kilns.
  4. Providing assistance to community members and volunteers in the studio.
  5. Maintaining the ceramics studio and equipment.
  6. Performing administrative duties relating to Chili Bowl, as necessary.

Eligibility

Applicants will be eligible if they have the following:

  1. Wheel-throwing experience.
  2. An interest in functional clay.

Benefits:

All internships include a private room in WSW’s on-campus Anne Atwood House and a stipend of $400 per month.
