The European University Institute in Italy is seeking to hire a post-doctoral research assistant in the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies for a full-time position to work on the Mercator Dialogue on Asylum and Migration (MEDAM) Project. MEDAM conducts new research on issues related to asylum, migration and mobility in the European Union. The selected applicant will become a “Research Associate” at the Migration Policy Centre (MPC), in which he/she will be responsible for analyzing the nature and determinants of political conflicts between EU member states about how to respond to the increased flows of asylum seekers, refugees and migrants in the recent years. The project will specifically investigate the role of cross-country variations in national institutions in contributing to disagreements between EU countries about creating more effective common policies in the area. It will also include quantitative analysis of large-scale datasets covering different EU member states as well as in-depth interviews with policy makers. Project outputs will include academic publications, blog posts and policy briefs. The contract can be renewed several times up to a total of 5 years. Eligibility criteria is:
[1] PhD in Politics, Social Policy, Economics or any related social science discipline
[2] Excellent research skills and knowledge of determinants of public policies
[3] Research experience in the political economy of asylum, refugees, immigration and/or any other related public policy issues
[4] Experience with using qualitative research methods, comparative welfare state literature, comparative cross-country analysis and engaging in public policy debates
The basic monthly salary after taxes is approximately €2,200. The research assistant will also receive an annual leave entitlement of 2 days per month, flexible working hours with the supervisor, health insurance, and the coverage of travel expenses on entry/termination of services.
