Opportunity description

FAO offers a job opportunity as an economist (Commodity Market and Policy Analysis). You will report to the senior economist, team leader, raw materials, horticulture, and tropical products team, under the overall guidance of the division’s director. Analytical work on commodity markets and trade, projections, and price and policy analysis for raw materials, horticulture, and tropical products. Comprehensive technical, statistical, analytical and/or policy analysis services and the development of specialized tools, methodologies, systems and/or databases to support the planning, implementation/delivery and monitoring of the program of work and related products, projects, publications, and services.

Eligibility:

You must have:

  • Advanced university degree in economics, agricultural economics, or a related field.
  • Seven years of relevant experience in economic research and quantitative analysis, including experience in international agricultural commodity markets and trade, economic modeling, and database management.
  • Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of one of the other FAO official languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

  • The required technical/functional skills:
  1. Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions is desirable.
  2. Extent and relevant experience in advanced economic research and analysis, including the use of statistical and econometrics methods and relevant software.
  3. Demonstrated experience in quantitative commodity price and policy analysis and in policy advice to countries.
  4. Proven strong experience in database development and management.
  5. The extent of knowledge of the problems of developing countries and in the formulation, monitoring, and evaluation of commodity development projects.
  6. Ability to mobilize extra-budgetary resources.

Your Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for:

  1. Plans and leads components of multi-disciplinary teams and short-term workgroups, leads and/or participates on Divisional teams, participate in organization-wide committees, project teams, and working groups, and provides specialized expertise on international technical networks and or technical policy and standard-setting bodies.
  2. Develops technical, statistical, analytical, monitoring, and reporting frameworks, and related tools, methodologies, systems and databases etc. to support the planning, implementation/delivery and monitoring of the programmes of work, products, projects, and services.
  3. Designs and conducts research, data collection, validation, analysis and/or reporting activities to support the development of technical standards, international instruments, innovative tools and methodologies, flagship publications/technical reports and/or policy proposals as well as the provision of technical specialist and/or policy advice and expertise.
  4. Responds to requests and provides technical/policy advice, assistance, and solutions to Regional, Sub-Regional, and Country Offices and provides technical backstopping to field projects.
  5. Provides advice to countries on the development, implementation, and monitoring of relevant technical assistance projects on agricultural commodities, and conducts technical backstopping.
  6. Supports the production of the OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook report for the commodities under the responsibility of the team and ensures any required follow-up activity.
  7. Prepares and contributes to the preparation of reports, papers, notes, policy briefs, and statements for senior management in the area of agricultural markets and trade and related issues.
  8. Conducts capacity development at country and regional levels.
  9. Prepares project proposals for extra-budgetary funding.
  10. Represents the division and FAO in relevant meetings, conferences, and events.
  11. Develops and maintains partnerships and collaboration with internal and external partners.
  12. Perform other tasks and duties, as required.
