FAO is offering a job opportunity in Egypt as an Agricultural Consultant (RPW Specialist). The incumbent is expected to support the activities of plant protection in RNE within the wider context of sustainable and productive agriculture. This includes comprehensive technical, statistical, policy and analytical services, and the development of specialized tools, methodologies, systems and/or databases to support the planning, implementation/delivery and monitoring of the program of work and related products, projects, publications, and services.
Contract Duration:
11 months (with the possibility of extension).
Required Qualifications:
- Advanced university degree in agriculture, plant sciences, agronomy with specialization in crop protection, Integrated pest Management or related field;
- Five years of relevant experience in plant protection and pest or pesticide management;
- Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two or Arabic, Chinese, Russian.
- Extent and relevance of experience in the provision of technical and policy advice to countries on Red Palm Weevil and other migratory pests
- Extent and relevance of field experience in pest and pesticide management;
- Extent and relevance of experience in project/program formulation and implementation of projects, programs and studies on plant protection including integrated pest management;
- Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions is desirable
- Extensive skills and experience in field testing and validation of RPW management or related technologies;
- Possessing FAO Core Competencies: Results Focus, Teamwork, Communication, Building Effective Relationships, and Knowledge Sharing and Continuous Improvement.
Job Responsibilities and Duties:
- Collaborate in promoting applied research as per country needs in technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional, technological, and data and statistical fields, to support the delivery of a programme of work, projects, products, and services.
- Support on-going innovation, remote sensing, and data collection using state-of-the-art technology to improve efficiency and effectiveness of monitoring, early warning and control systems of transboundary plant pests and diseases with special attention on Red Palm Weevil.
- Contribute to the provision of technical support/analysis to various assessments, studies, and initiatives and identifies, develops and provides projects technical backstopping to field projects.
- Work with multi-disciplinary teams, lead and/or participate in internal committees, project teams, and working groups and provides specialized expertise to technical networks and/or international technical policy and/or international technical policy and standard-setting bodies;
- Support monitoring of and reporting of results by developing technical, analytical, monitoring and reporting frameworks, and related methodologies, tools, systems, and databases, etc.
- Plan, organize, conduct and monitor program of work, projects, products and/or services;
- Conduct research, data collection, validation, analysis and/or reporting activities to support the development of technical standards, international instruments, innovative approaches and strategies;
- Promote international cooperation, advocates best practices increased policy dialogue and provides technical expertise at international and intergovernmental meetings;
- Contribute to the preparation of technical publications, and progress reports for projects;
- Practical working experience in RPW management or related aspects in NENA Region and other infested countries;
- Performs other related duties as required.
