Opportunity description

Human Rights Watch is seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Arabic Translations Associate. The position will support HRW online, one of the world’s premier sources of human rights information. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday from 12 PM to 9 PM GMT. This is a fixed-term position for one year and is preferably based in Tunis, Beirut or Amman but other MENA locations will be considered, pending security considerations.

Responsibilities:

[1] Support translation requests and ensure a smooth work flow and respect of deadlines.

[2] Coordinate, edit, and vet translations (English to Arabic and Arabic to English) for accuracy and keeping daily record of translations and track how many words per day the Arabic translation process can produce at any given time.

[3] Liaise with freelance translators and provide translators with feedback.

[4] Update HRW’s Arabic language glossary and translation memory system, providing translators with updated lexicons of legal international human rights law and international humanitarian law terminology to ensure homogeneity of terms.

[5] Translate urgent short documents and texts (invitations, report blurbs, captions, and letters).

[6] Process invoices and attain approval from managers.

[7] Maintain communication among HRW offices, global staff, and external partners.

[8] Work with the Multimedia Division to translate photo essay captions and video subtitles in a timely manner.

Requirements:

[1] A degree in Arabic translation, journalism, social sciences, international relations, Middle Eastern studies, or relevant studies.

[2] A minimum of one year of directly related experience in translations.

[3] Applicants for this position must be legally authorized to work in the country in which they are based.

[4] Exceptional oral and written communication skills in English and Arabic are required; excellent knowledge of classical Arabic grammar; working knowledge of French is a plus.

[5] Demonstrated experience with translating material from English to Arabic and vice versa is required and experience with translation workflows is desirable.

[6] Proven track record as a writer and/or editor is required; excellent editing and proofreading skills in Arabic is required; ability to apply a standardized style guide.

[7] Strong online/Microsoft Office skills.

[8] Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment while juggling multiple tasks.

[9] Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally.

[10] Ability to express ideas clearly and logically.

[11] Ability to recognize editorial opportunities.

[12] Flexibility in responding quickly to events as they occur and producing excellent written material under tight deadlines.
