The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) announces its need for a Communications Management Specialist. The role aims to support the Communications Department in developing and implementing communication strategies and raising awareness to create a positive impact regarding UNRWA activities and Palestinian refugee issues.
Duties & responsibilities
- Provide support to the Communications Director and Senior Communications Manager in developing, managing, coordinating, implementing, and monitoring advocacy and communication strategies, including preparing and/or coordinating relevant communication materials for review and approval by the Communications Department.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for the UNRWA Communications Department, handling incoming and outgoing communication requests, managing internal networks, organizing monthly communications meetings and follow-ups, and promoting coordination within the agency.
- Organize interviews for UNRWA’s official spokespersons.
- Develop and update core communication tools, resources, and products, including key messages, talking points, FAQs, fact sheets, situation reports, and the official spokesperson roster.
- Liaise with counterparts in other UN agencies holding similar positions to exchange information, ensure accuracy, and monitor the use of UNRWA content by UN partners and external entities.
- Draft statements, press releases, and other materials related to UNRWA achievements, events, crises, and emergencies, including headlines, content, figures, and advocacy requests.
- Conduct analysis and monitoring of media coverage of UNRWA, identifying misinformation or inaccuracies about the agency.
- Manage the production and/or preparation and dissemination of regular and ad hoc monitoring and evaluation reports on these issues.
- Provide support to other members of the Communications Department, particularly the Head of Digital Communications and Multimedia and their team, including multimedia content production.
Eligibility criteria
- An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) from an accredited educational institution in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field.
- At least five years of professional experience in communications, including print, broadcast, or digital media, with progressively increasing responsibilities.
- Practical experience in communications within international organizations or international NGOs, along with field experience.
- Unless the candidate for an international position is already part of the UN international workforce, they must have at least two continuous years of relevant international experience outside UNRWA and outside their country (or countries) of nationality.
- Candidates are required to disclose any current or past affiliations with NGOs, academic institutions, political organizations, or military entities, or if they have participated in activities or made public statements that could affect their impartiality, objectivity, or independence in performing duties within the UN/UNRWA. Disclosure does not automatically disqualify candidates from applying for this position.
