The IAEA offers a one-year internship in Austria in Water Resources and Climate Management to students and those holding an undergraduate or postgraduate degree within one year of application.
Duties & responsibilities
Under supervision of the Section Head and the direct guidance of the responsible technical officers, the Intern carries out the key tasks related to nuclear applications in water resources management:
- Assist with development of a strategy for the Isotope Hydrology Section to showcase the role isotope hydrology can play in understanding the impacts of climate change on water resources.
- Assist with development of an outreach plan that identifies appropriate partnerships between the Isotope Hydrology Section at the IAEA and other UN partner organisations as well as intergovernmental bodies in the area of water resource management, climate change, and climate adaptation and resilience strategies.
- Liaise with youth forums that engage with climate change and water resource management to promote the climate adaptation and resilience activities of the Isotope Hydrology Section.
- Assist with development of a multi-media strategy to promote the climate adaptation and resilience activities of the Isotope Hydrology Section and the Water Resources Programme 2.3 in preparation for COP27.
- Assists with preparation of multi-media products for promotion of the Water Resources Programme 2.3 and the climate adaptation and resilience activities undertaken by the Isotope Hydrology Section for COP27.
Eligibility criteria
- Candidates must be a minimum of 20 years of age and have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree.
- University degree in isotope hydrology, environmental sciences, hydrogeology, hydrology or related field.
- Candidates may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree.
- Candidates must not have previously participated in the IAEA's internship programme.
- Good written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian) an asset.
- Expertise in GIS and good knowledge in mathematical / statistical tools like R or Python.
- Experience in the application of isotope techniques for water resources management.
- Knowledge in the use of environmental isotopes to assess hydrological and hydrogeological systems.
- Solid knowledge of Hydrology and Ground Water Hydrology.
- Solid knowledge in of standard office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team, with respect for and sensitivity to a multi-cultural environment.
- Excellent ability and confidence in communicating with a range of international partners, and ability to initiate, build and maintain professional relationships with project counterparts.
- Prior experience with social media outreach an advantage but not essential.
