IRC offers a job opportunity in the USA as a food and agriculture assistant. You will support day-to-day farm operations and site maintenance of New Roots Community Farm (Bronx) or New Roots Garden (Queens), implement job training and community engagement activities, and supporting production and market expansion activities. This position works with staff, interns, garden members, volunteers, and community members to increase production and information exchange at the farm and garden sites. This position is currently a seasonal part-time position, with the potential for extension.
Duties & responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Contribute to overall site maintenance: composting, clean-up, and sourcing materials.
- Expand current growing areas, create planting schedules, and maintain shared/public areas.
- Coordinate work-day activities with community members and support volunteers on site.
- Assist with harvest and distribution through donation partner and weekly farm-stand.
- Provide support to community member working groups to implement crop planning, site maintenance, marketing, and community outreach efforts.
- Organize educational and community-building events in collaboration with local partners at urban agriculture sites.
- Conduct community outreach for program initiatives.
- Develop and maintain community partnerships in the Bronx and Queens.
- Collaborate with other IRC programs to carry out job training programming hosted at farm and garden sites in the Bronx and Queens.
- Support the tracking of quantifiable measurements to assess project effectiveness.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Eligibility criteria
You must have:
- A minimum of 2 years experience in sustainable agriculture/urban farming projects.
- Strong knowledge of food and farming issues.
- Physical ability to carry out gardening and farm-related activities.
- Demonstrated experience in community organizing and engagement, particularly with disadvantaged communities, is preferred.
- Experience in working in a diverse, and non-traditional setting with a diverse client base.
- Background in training is preferred.
- Be a Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to multi-task, prioritize duties, and manage time effectively.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and an overall ability to be clear and concise in communications.
- Strong organizational skills with proven attention to detail.
- Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
- Proven ability to contribute both independently and as a key team member.
- A proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Ability to work onsite at Bronx farm or Queens garden.
- Be fluent in English, both spoken and written; bilingual ability a plus, preferably in Spanish, French, Arabic, Nepali, Urdu, Dari/Farsi and/or Pashto.
- Ability to work both independently and in a dynamic, cross-functional team structure.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
- Work takes place primarily onsite at urban farms and gardens during variable weather conditions.
