The RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences (RIKEN IMS) is one of Japan’s leading research institutions, established in 2013 with the goal of developing innovative medical sciences that contribute to the future of human health. The center focuses on genome science, immunology, physiology, bioinformatics, molecular, chemical, and quantitative sciences, adopting a highly interdisciplinary approach.
The RIKEN IMS Internship Program is a short-term research internship (1 to 3 months) welcoming outstanding students and postdoctoral researchers from around the world. It offers a unique opportunity to engage in research activities within RIKEN IMS laboratories in Japan.
Number of positions:
Approximately 8 participants per year
Internship location:
RIKEN IMS – Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan

Application timeline:
There is no fixed application window, but applications must be submitted at least 4 months before the intended start date.
Applicants will be notified of the results approximately one month after the host lab submits their documents to RIKEN.
Duties & responsibilities
For Category 1 (Students):
- Travel expenses covered
- Free accommodation (based on number of days)
- Daily allowance: 3,000 JPY per working day
For Category 2 (Postdoctoral researchers):
- Travel expenses covered
- Free accommodation
- No daily allowance provided
Eligibility criteria
Category 1 (Students):
- Enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program, or a medical degree equivalent to Master’s level in Japan
- Must be enrolled in an academic institution during the internship
Category 2 (Postdoctoral researchers):
- Within 3 years of receiving a PhD
- Must be affiliated with an academic institution at the time of the internship
Important notes:
The internship is unpaid for postdocs and partially funded for students
All documents must be submitted in English
Interns are responsible for cancellation fees if they withdraw after arrangements are made
