Opportunity description

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) announces its need for a Senior Protection Assistant. The incumbent will monitor protection standards, procedures, and operational practices in the delivery of protection services in line with international standards, and provide functional support in the field of protection to Information and Program Management staff.


Duties & responsibilities

  • Provide advice on protection issues to affected individuals and coordinate with relevant authorities to ensure the issuance of personal and other related documents.
  • Support protection-related activities in age- and gender-sensitive programs with implementing partners and staff.
  • Conduct initial data collection and interviews to support eligibility determination, legal status assessment, durable solutions, and social needs evaluation.
  • Contribute to measures aimed at identifying, preventing, and reducing statelessness.
  • Contribute to the country-level Child Protection Plan as part of the protection strategy.
  • Contribute to the development of a national education plan for at-risk individuals as part of the protection strategy.
  • Monitor standard operating procedures for all protection/solutions activities.
  • Participate in the management of individual protection cases, including gender-based violence and child protection cases. Monitor forced return, expulsion, and other protection incidents and report them.
  • Assist in finding sustainable solutions for affected individuals through voluntary return, local integration, or resettlement, where appropriate.
  • Contribute to the design, implementation, and evaluation of protection programs that are age- and gender-sensitive in collaboration with implementing partners and staff.
  • Prepare routine reports and correspondence, update relevant databases, and compile statistics within the area of responsibility.
  • Contribute to national and local capacity-building initiatives in protection.
  • Select individuals for initial interviews and determine relevant information to be shared.
  • Ensure the integrity of protection service delivery by local implementing partners.
  • Support risk identification and management and seek opportunities affecting objectives within the area of responsibility. Ensure risk-related decisions are made based on the functional work domain and report risks, issues, and concerns to the supervisor or relevant colleagues.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Eligibility criteria

  • Experience in protection, prevention, and refugee response, both inside and outside camps.
  • Knowledge and experience with case management standards and interviewing techniques.
  • Experience supporting and monitoring the implementation of protection activities by implementing partners.
  • Familiarity with participatory approaches when working with refugees and host communities, applying age, gender, and diversity-sensitive approaches.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate with government authorities on protection activities.
  • Skilled in report writing and providing clear, concise written analyses of protection needs.
  • Highly flexible to respond promptly to unplanned needs in a collaborative manner.
  • Excellent communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team in potentially challenging conditions.
  • Fluency in English and Arabic, both spoken and written, is required.
  • Qualifications: Two years of relevant experience with a high school diploma; or one year of relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent or higher – G5.
