$ 2,000,000 Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding 2018

Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding (SHATIU) invites translators from all around the world to participate in the contest for 2018. The award seeks to honor translators and acknowledge their role in strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation amongst peoples and nations of the world. It also aspires to inculcate a culture of knowledge and dialogue, promote Arab and Islamic culture, and encourage cross-cultural interaction between Arabic and other languages through the medium of translation. Award categories include: 

[1] Translation from Arabic into English

[2] Translation from English into Arabic

[3] Translation from Arabic into German

[4] Translation from German into Arabic

[5] Achievement Award

Achievement Awards include:

[1] Translation from Arabic into Bosnian

[2] Translation from Bosnian  into Arabic 

[3] Translation from Arabic into Italian

[4] Translation from Italian into Arabic

[5] Translation from Arabic into Japanese 

[6] Translation from Japanese into Arabic 

[7] Translation from Arabic into Russian

[8] Translation from Russian into Arabic 

[9] Translation from Arabic into Swahili

[10] Translation from Swahili into Arabic

Participation rules:

[1] Nominations are limited to the fields of the humanities and the social sciences

[2] Individuals and institutions (publishing houses, research centers, translation institutes, university departments etc.) can participate

[3] All nominees must be living at the time of nomination

[4] Only one translated work is accepted for nomination by individuals in the first category. Institutions can nominate up to 3 translated works by 3 different translators

[5] All nominated translations in the first category must have been published in the 5 years prior to the announcement of the award

[6] The achievement prizes are not subject to time limitation and can be awarded to a set of works/achievements of a lifetime

Judging criteria:

[1] Significance of the translated work (30 points)

[2] Translation accuracy and precision (40 points)

[3] Translation stylistics and aesthetics (30 points)

Prizes:

The total value of the award is $2,000,000, divided into 3 categories: Translation Prizes of $800,000, Achievement Prizes of $1,000,000 and prize for International Understanding of $200,000.

About Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding:

Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding was founded in Doha, Qatar in 2015. It is an international prize run by a board of trustees, a steering committee and independent panels of judges.
