Opportunity description
The Samir Kassir Award for Journalism is a prize given and funded entirely by the European Union. The competition is open to press journalists (Employees of the daily, weekly and monthly print or electronic press) and audiovisual media (Employees of television stations, production companies or television channels on the Internet), of different ages, provided that they hold the nationality of one of the following countries: Jordan, Israel, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Tunisia, Algeria, Syria, Iraq, Oman, Occupied Palestinian Territory, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Egypt, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
Contest Instructions:
- Candidates must submit an opinion paper or an survey article on one of the following topics: The rule of law, human rights, good governance, combating corruption, freedom of opinion and expression, democratic development, civic participation; Provided that it has been published in newspapers, publications or press sites published in one of the above-mentioned countries or in one of the Member States of the European Union (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Hungary, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden). The nominated article should not exceed 25,000 characters and be published between 15 March 2018 and 15 March 2019 inclusive.
- Candidates must submit an audiovisual report on one of the following topics: The rule of law, human rights, good governance, combating corruption, freedom of opinion and expression, democratic development, civic participation; Provided that it has been displayed at a terrestrial, satellite or electronic television station broadcasted by one of the above-mentioned States or a Member State of the European Union between 15 March 2018 and 15 March 2019 inclusive and shall not exceed seven minutes.
- Candidates must clearly identify which of the three categories their article or report belongs to. Candidates for the "opinion article" category and the "survey article" category should be nominated individually (no group work will be accepted). The audiovisual director or producer of the audiovisual report may be nominated for the audiovisual report category individually or bilaterally.
- The European Union is entitled to republish the opinion essay and isurvey article and to re-broadcast the winning audiovisual report in its own publications and its (non-commercial) websites. It is also entitled to use winning articles and reports in other printed or electronic publications related to the Samir Kassir Award for Freedom of the Press.
- The members of the jury, EU (European Union) officials and members of the Samir Kassir Foundation are excluded from this competition.

The Prize :
