Opportunity description
Since their inception in 1945, the AAAS Science Journalism Awards have honored professional journalists for distinguished reporting on the sciences, engineering, and mathematics. In recognition of a generous endowment by The Kavli Foundation, the awards now are called the AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards, and the contest is open to journalists worldwide. New Video categories have been created which replaced and broaden what had been the Television categories. The new categories encompass both traditional broadcast television and cable entries as well as stand-alone digital videos that formerly had been accepted in the Online category. The aim is to honor high quality video science journalism, regardless of platform. As with the previous Television categories, they are seeking programs and segments by professional journalists and producers aimed at a general audience. The judging panels, with the guidance of the Managing Committee, will determine the journalistic eligibility of video entries.
Entries categories are:
[1] Print Entries: Large Newspaper, Small Newspaper, or Magazine.
[2] Audio Entries (radio or podcast): Entries may consist of either a single story; an entry of three unrelated stories; or a thematic series.
[3] Video Entries: which include two categories:
- Spot News/Feature Reporting: A single segment or series not to exceed 20 minutes in total.
- In-Depth Reporting: Programs or segments of more than 20 minutes.
[4] Online Entries: Entries may consist of either a single story; a thematic series with no more than three parts submitted for judging; or a group of three unrelated stories.
[5] Children’s Science News Entries: This prize is for work distributed via any medium — print, broadcast or online. The prize recognizes excellence in reporting news on science for children, including young teens up to age 14.
Two awards will be given in each of the Categories, a Gold award worth $5,000 and a Silver award worth $3,500. One winner for each award also will receive reasonable travel and hotel expenses to attend the awards ceremony in February 2019 in Washington, D.C., and claim the award.
Applicants must:
[1] Be individuals over the age of eighteen (18) years as of August 1, 2018 who are residing and located in a jurisdiction where the contest is lawful.
[2] Submit publications which have been originally published, broadcast, or posted online during the contest year.
