Opportunity description

Entries are now being accepted for The Val Wood Prize for Creative Writing 2019. The theme of this year’s competition is "Love Letters" and the competition wants you to pack them with romance, originality, and creativity. The competition is open to anyone over 16 years of age. Entries should be in the form of a love letter and entrants are free to write about whatever they wish as long as the theme of love and the form of a letter are adhered to. Each entry can contain more than one letter, provided that the maximum word count is 1500 word per letter.

Eligibility:

  1. All entries must be typed or neatly handwritten with a maximum word-count of 1500 word.
  2. Entries may contain more than one letter but max word count must be adhered to per submission.
  3. This year, the competition is eco-friendly and entries must be submitted by email.
  4. Entries from already commercially published writers will not be accepted.
  5. Previous entrants/winners may enter the competition again using alternative entries.
  6. Entries that have been submitted before will be disqualified from the competition.
  7. Entries must be the original work of the competitor, in English, and must not have been published, broadcast or have won a competition prize. No alterations can be made to a story once it has been submitted.
  8. Entrants can win only one prize. The decision of the judge is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  9. Copyright remains with the author, but the organizers reserve the right to publish the winning entries online or in print for one year.
  10. The organizers reserve the right to alter details of the competition if necessary.
  11. Entrants who do not abide by the above rules will not be considered.

Note: The winner of the competition and runners up will be announced at a special ceremony at Hull Central Library on 2 November 2019 at 2pm. The winner may be photographed and interviewed for publicity purposes.
