Opportunity description

Dyalog is proud to announce 2018 APL competition to students from all round the world. The competition is about using the APL programming language and problem solving skills where students will learn to use analytical software packages with built-in methods for solving many problems encountered in research and business.

APL is a dynamic array-oriented language, which means that the type and shape of your data drives the execution of APL expressions, without your having to be explicit about data types or write loops.

Eligibility:
To be eligible for participation in this competition, you must be able to prove full-time primary, secondary, college or graduate enrollment. You can be on a sabbatical as long as you will be returning to full-time student status within a year. A panel of judges with extensive APL experience will evaluate the submissions and determine the winners, as the judging criteria will be based on:
[1] Completeness: did you solve the problem? Did you comment your code?
[2] Use of array-oriented thinking did you write array-oriented APL or something that looks like C# written in APL?
[3] Any other criteria the judging committee deems appropriate

The 2018 APL problem solving contest prizes are $6,500 and a paid trip to the annual Dyalog user meeting in Northern Ireland, UK. The prizes are as follows:
[1] Grand prize: $2,500 cash prize and an invitation to attend the 2018 Dyalog user meeting in Northern Ireland from October 28 to November 14, 2018. Travel costs up to $3,500 plus $500 for incidental expenses and all user meeting fees will be provided by Dyalog.
[2] Second prize: $1,250 cash prize
[3] Third prize: $750 cash prize
[4] The top 10 Phase I participants will each receive a $100 cash prize.
[5] 5 participants who submit at least one correct entry for Phase II of the competition will be randomly selected to receive a $200 cash prize.
[6] One non-student participant will win complimentary registration and accommodation for the 2018 Dyalog user meeting.
APL is a programming language which can change the way you think about problems. Even if APL is not available to you when solving tasks or problems in the future, the techniques learned while studying APL will allow you to think about data and problem-solving in a new way.
About APL:
APL is a programming language developed in the 1960s by Kenneth E. Iverson. Its central datatype is the multidimensional array. It uses a large range of special graphic symbol to represent most functions and operators, leading to very concise code. APL will allow you to apply your problem-solving skills directly to your data to explore essential characteristics of data sets of any type and structure, and interactively mine the universe of algorithms for solutions to a wide variety of problems.
