Opportunity description
The Allianz Group invites scientific research that improves understanding of climate change-related risks to participate in the Allianz Climate Risk Research Award for 2018. The award focuses on the topic “Climate risk: real-time information and new technologies”. It is intended to support researchers whose research focuses on reducing the risk of extreme weather events that are intensified by climate change, and fostering resilience by applying technological solutions.
The contest is looking for research projects that work on or build the basis for innovative solutions such as:
[1] Using social media or drones to deliver information on the extent and impact of flood or hail events
[2] Improving predicting capabilities for flash floods and heavy precipitation events
[3] Assessing the risks of droughts through satellite monitoring technology
[4] Understanding how new technologies can change early warning systems and their effectiveness for society
[5] Understanding decision-making processes around climate adaptation and resilience on the household, local and international level
Please note: PhD students who are in the final stage of their research and postdoctoral researchers who have recently finished their research are invited to apply, as well as individual applications from the fields of natural sciences and economic and social sciences.
Selection criteria:
[1] Innovation: Research project is focused on a compelling approach for assessing risks of natural catastrophes and how new technologies can help mitigate these risks and foster resilient societies
[2] Impact: Research project can make a difference on the current insurance practice and/or advance current practices around societal resilience
[3] Applicability: Research project addresses a relevant problem and is ideally connected to a practical solution
[4] Academic excellence: Sound research approach and methodology
Prize:
For the 2018 event, four finalists will receive:
[1] Monetary award: €7,000 for the first finalist, €5,000 for the second finalist, €3,000 for the third finalist and €2,000 for the fourth finalist
[2] Invitation for a one-day Award event in Munich with all costs covered
[3] Exposure of the finalists’ research projects on the website
[4] Exclusive insights into the insurance industry’s work on climate change and extreme weather events
[5] Participation in a discussion round with the Award’s jury, experts and other guests from Allianz Group and academia
