Opportunity description
Wikitopia Project is inviting people from all over the world to apply for the Wikitopia International Competition. They solicit new ideas that will become the foundational building blocks of Wikitopia - “future cities created by everyone”, and any idea that “affects urban space or people’s activities within it, through spontaneous actions of citizens (physical, digital, or a combination thereof)”.
They ask to come up with ideas for new “apps” that go beyond such precedents. Apps can make use of existing or (reasonably realistic) near-future technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, IoT (Internet of Things), 3D Printing and other Digital Fabrication techniques, Virtual and Augmented Reality, Projection Mapping, Drones, Self-driving Cars, etc. Also, apps can require (again, reasonably realistic) new legislation, regulations, or infrastructures as prerequisites for their deployment.
The competition will be held in two phases: Phase 1 Competition and Phase 2 Competition.
Existing ideas include the following:
[1] Graffiti, and other spontaneous street art
[2] Chair-bombing: spontaneously installing chairs/benches in public space
[3] Park lets: spontaneously building small parks in public space, such as parking spaces
[4] Guerrilla gardening: spontaneously converting vacant lots into gardens
[5] Farmers Markets: temporary markets created by multiple small stores gathering in public space
[6] Civic Crowdfunding: The use of crowdfunding to finance communal urban projects
[7] Sharing Services: Software services that facilitate efficient use of urban resources (Uber, Airbnb, etc.)
[8] New public programs that support DIY-style urbanism, such as San Francisco’s Groundplay and the NYC Plaza Program
Eligibility:
[1] There are no restrictions regarding age, nationality, professional status, etc.
[2] Both individuals and groups (with one individual serving as the group leader) are encouraged to participate.
[3] There are no limits regarding the number of submissions by a single individual/group.
