Canon's Contest for Professional and Amateur Photographers 2018

Canon Inc. invites professional and amateur photographers from all over the world to participate in its cultural project ‘New Cosmos of Photography’ which aims to discover, nurture and support new photographers. Since its launch in 1991, the program has encouraged participants to explore new and creative ways to engage with photography, and included more forms of photographic expression. With the support and cooperation of renowned photographers, videographers, artists, curators, and photo and art critics from Japan and around the world who have endorsed the contest’s objectives and have been involved in judging the contest, the New Cosmos of Photography has turned out a great number of outstanding photographers who are enjoying widespread success around the world. As a result, the contest has come to be regarded today as a gateway to success for new photographers.

Eligibility criteria includes:

[1] There are no restrictions on nationality, age, gender, or experience (both professional and amateur photographers may enter)

[2] Both individuals and groups may participate in the contest. Submissions by groups, however, is restricted to groups that plan to continue activities as a group in the future

[3] Participants under the age of 16 cannot enter the contest without the consent of a parent or guardian

[4] Canon Group employees and their immediate family members are not eligible to participate

This year’s judging panel has been expanded to include judges from outside of Japan. The Excellence Award Selection Committee will meet in July to choose seven Excellence Award winners and 14 Honorable Mention Award winners. In November, the Grand Prize selection committee is scheduled to meet to decide the Grand Prize winner who will receive:

[1] Prize money totaling JPY 1 million (which includes the JPY 200,000 prize money for the Excellence Award)  and
a product of Canon

 [2] The opportunity to host a solo exhibit to launch the exhibition of winning 2018 entries for next year’s New Cosmos of Photography

Excellence Award winners will receive:

[1] Prize money totaling JPY 200,000

[2] Works exhibited at the New Cosmos of Photography Exhibition 2018

[3] Works showcased on website and magazine

Honorable Mention Award winners will receive:

[1] Prize money totaling JPY 30,000

[2] Works exhibited at the New Cosmos of Photography Exhibition 2018
