Future News Worldwide is a partnership program between the British Council and some of the world's leading media organizations. The aim is to support young people to develop a wide range of journalism skills and to establish the UK as a global leader in the nurturing of young journalists and media figures.
Eligibility:
- Be aged 18-25 on 1 July 2020
- Be a registered student, enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate (Master - PhD) course at a university or higher education institution OR Have graduated from a degree course after 1 July 2018
- Be a native speaker of English OR be able to speak English at IELTS level 6.5 or equivalent (a formal qualification is not required, just the ability to speak at this level)
- Not have participated in Future News Worldwide or Future NEWS before
- Be dedicated to a career in journalism, in any form
- Be available to travel to and from the UK on any date between 11 - 16 July 2020.
Application questions:
- The online application form includes two questions designed to test your journalistic skills and interests.
- Read these two questions below and prepare your answers before starting the online application.
- Compose your answers to these questions offline, then copy and paste them into the form.
- If you wish to give your answer as a written article you should use the space provided.
- If you wish to respond in multimedia format (such as video) please upload your file to a hosting site (e.g Youtube, Vimeo, Soundcloud) and provide a link in this space.
- All answers will be judged equally regardless of format.
Q1. Please provide a personal statement telling us about your journalism experience and your motivation for applying
You should refer to the following in your answer:
- The type of journalism you do, and why you are passionate about it
- Any experience you have which was not done as part of a university course
- Projects you are currently working on
- What you think you need to do or learn to improve your journalism
Limit; 300 words, or 2 minutes (video/audio)
Q.2. Please provide a reportage on the subject of your choice about your home country or country of residence.
- Reportage is a journalistic article.
- It should be clear that the topic you are discussing is well-researched, based on facts
- and understandable to the reader even if they have no background knowledge of the subject.
- It can reflect a point of view but should not be an opinion.
- You may use a reportage which has been published previously as long as it is all your own work (i.e. not a group project)
The topic maybe:
- Political
- Environmental
- Technological
- Social
Please specify in your response which of these topics you are addressing.
Limit: 500 words, or three minutes of video/audio.
Funding:
- The prize consists of a place at the Future News Worldwide 2020 conference
- This includes the following
- Return travel from a local airport to London for the dates of the Conference
- The application fee of one Standard Service visa application (if required)
- Accommodation
- Catering on the following basis:
13 July – dinner
14 and 15 July - all meals
16 July – breakfast only
