Opportunity description
What direction is the European Union heading today? What would the Union look like without UK? What are the membership prospects for the Western Balkans? Are you interested in learning more about the European Union and its future?
The Center for Constitutional Studies and Democratic Development (CCSDD) is inviting students from around the world to apply for the European Union and Legal Reform (EULR) Summer School that will take place on July 8 to July 14, 2018 in Montenegro. The year 2018 marks a special year for the European Union which finds itself facing many new challenges but also looking for ways forward. There are many issues that particularly intrigue jurists like movements toward independence such as the Catalan referendum, the Brexit negotiations, and the EU's relationship with its Eastern neighbors. How has the European Economic Constitution transformed through the financial crisis? Which are the new emerging institutional arrangements for the European governance? This year's edition of the Summer School will explore some of these issues and bring them in the context of the EU enlargement effort. The primary activities consist of lectures and discussions, in addition to a boat trip and a visit to cultural sites.
Applicants must be final-year undergraduate students and graduate students in Law and Political Science, as well as young professionals and scholars. They must also have a solid background knowledge in European Law and an understanding of the mechanisms of EU enlargement.
The center offers a number of full and partial scholarships to students who request the funding during the application process. The full cost of tuition, accommodation and food during the time of the conference is €850,000. Selection of applicants will be based on the academic merit of the application, and those who are willing to bear the participation costs fully or partially will be preferred in case of equally strong applications.
The Center for Constitutional Studies and Democratic Development (CCSDD) is a research partnership between the School of Law of the University of Bologna and the Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies in Bologna, Italy. The center conducts research and training in the field of comparative constitutional law, focusing on countries undergoing a process of democratic transition. Through conferences, workshops, publications, summer schools, study trips, and speaker series, the CCSDD addresses issues of civil society development and legal reform.
