Opportunity description
The Institut Français is in charge of implementing France’s cultural action abroad, and was set up by the French Foreign Cultural Action Act in 2010. Under the supervision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, its role is to act as the conduit for a new, more ambitious diplomacy of influence within the framework of French governmental policies and priorities. It will help promote the French influence abroad through greater dialogue with foreign culture, while responding to the needs of France through a policy of listening, partnership and openness to other cultures.
The Institut Français invites artists from all around the world who wish to pursue a research project in Paris for 3 to 6 months to apply for a residency opportunity for 2019. The program is aimed at artists in every artistic discipline: Architecture/landscape/urbanism, street arts/circus/puppets, digital arts, visual arts, comics, cinema/movies/video, curating projects, dance/performances, design, literature, youth book, fine arts and crafts, modern music and jazz, classical and contemporary music, contemporary art performances, photography, theatre, and musics for films and video games.
The associated partner who submits the application must:
[1] Commit in writing to cover the travel and/or subsistence expenses of the artist and can also specify the financial commitment of other partners involved in the project
[2] Provide a reasoned opinion on the reasons for its support of the artist
[3] Explicitly indicate how it intends to showcase the work of the laureate during or following the residency
Applicants must:
[1] Have started their professional life
[2] Speak French or English
[3] Provide proof of previous artistic work
[4] Be independent to organize their residency on their own once in Paris
[5] Be available (without any professional obligations) during the residency
In addition to the evaluation of the applicant’s professional accomplishments, a special attention will be given to the project quality, the necessity to stay in Paris during the residency, the applicant’s French and English proficiency, the process of work the applicant has elaborated for his residency and the capacity to develop collaborations with contacts the applicant has established in France, such as: art centers, cultural structures, artists, curators, critics, researchers, etc. The institute provides artists with a studio-apartments at the Cité internationale des arts. The partner associated with the artist, in France or abroad, finances the artist's travel and/or living expenses and submits the artist's application.
