Opportunity description

The 2018 Environmental Photographer of the Year is now open to entries to all professional and amateur, national and international photographers of all ages, the CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year is an international showcase for the very best in environmental photography. The competition encourages entries that are contemporary, creative, resonant, challenging, original and beautiful, but most of all, pictures that will inspire people around the world to start taking care of our environment.

The CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year showcases the very best in environmental photography. Highlighting the terrible impacts being wrought on our planet by its most dominant species the competition also celebrates humanity’s innate ability to survive and innovate, lending hope to us all that we can overcome challenges to live sustainably.

Each entrant may enter up to 10 photographs in the following categories:

[1] Environmental Photographer of the Year: Awarded to a single image which triggers debate, inspires action and improves understanding of the causes, impacts and solutions to environmental change and social inequality.

[2] Changing Climates Prize: Chronicling environmental change and the resilience of the individuals and communities facing adversity including extreme weather events, environmental destruction, energy security and conservation of our natural resources.

[3] Built Environment Prize: Focusing on people and our urban environments including environmental solutions from design, materials and structures, smart and resilient cities, transport, waste and the connections between nature, society and infrastructure in our urban environments.

[4] Sustainability in Practice Prize: Revealing human connection to the natural world, this category explores sustainable environmental and economic development, the natural and social value of the environment, the circular economy and innovative adaptation and mitigation approaches to environmental change.

[5] Young Environmental Photographer of the Year (YEPOTY): This category showcases the best in environmental photography through the lens of young photographers aged 20 or under, inspiring people around the world to protect and conserve our natural environment.

Judging:

Entries will be judged depending on the impact, creativity, originality, composition, relevance, and technical quality. Entrants will have the chance for their image to be exhibited across the UK and internationally and ongoing extensive international media coverage and public exposure of your image through the competition. In addition to the following awards:

Environmental Photographer of the Year: £2,000 cash prize and personalised certificate

Changing Climates Prize: £500 cash prize and personalised certificate

Built Environment Prize: £500 cash prize and personalised certificate

Sustainability in Practice Prize: £500 cash prize and personalised certificate

Young Environmental Photographer of the Year: Camera equipment and an annual subscription to The Environment Magazine

Plus an Interview in one issue of CIWEM’s The Environment Magazine for each winner.
