What is the future of Nuclear Security?
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) invites students and early career professionals from any place in the world to participate in the 2020 Essay Competition on the “Future of Nuclear Security”. The contest is part of the International Conference on Nuclear Security: Sustaining and Strengthening Efforts, taking place from 10 to 14 February 2020 at IAEA headquarters in Vienna. The overall themes for the conference are as follows:
- International legally and non-legally binding instruments for nuclear security
- Role of the IAEA in nuclear security
- National nuclear security regimes
- Emerging technologies and the digital age
- International cooperation in information exchange, sharing of good practices and broader experience to enhance nuclear security
Eligibility criteria:
- Students and professionals below the age of 35 can submit their essays to the 2020 International Essay Competition on Nuclear Security, in cooperation with the International Nuclear Security Education Network
- The Agency especially encourages women and nationals from developing countries to participate in the essay competition
- Students and professionals involved in the multiple disciplines supporting nuclear security, including natural and social sciences, engineering, law, international relations and other legal, policy and technical disciplines are encouraged to take part
- The IAEA also welcomes entries by early career professionals from governments, competent authorities, including regulatory bodies, intelligence agencies, security agencies, response and law enforcement agencies, industry, academia and the non-governmental sector
- The length of the essay has to be up to 1,000 words
- Only one participation per person will be considered
- The essays can be submitted in any of the official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish)
Award:
Three finalists will be announced by 31 October 2019. They will each receive a cash prize of €2,000 and a certificate signed by IAEA Director General. The finalists will be invited to attend and present their essays at a side event of the Conference; the IAEA will cover all travel expenses. Winning essays will also be posted on the Conference website. Through the Conference, the IAEA will raise awareness to maintain and further strengthen national nuclear security regimes, review the status of nuclear security efforts, promote IAEA nuclear security guidance and good practices and discuss further enhancements of IAEA nuclear security activities as well as the central role of the IAEA.
