Opportunity description

Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is offering a fellowship opportunity for postgraduate study in medical statistics or epidemiology for students from Africa. 

Fellowship Program:-

  • The scheme will provide funding for 2 years. 

  • The first year is to study for an MSc in Medical Statistics or Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. 

  • The second year will be an attachment based at one of LSTM’s partner institutions in Tanzania or Uganda working as a statistician or an epidemiologist to gain on-the-job training in clinical, public health or population based research in chronic diseases. 

  • LSTM’s focus at present is the control of hypertension, diabetes and HIV-infection. It is planning to expand to incorporate mental health in the near future.

Eligibility:-

To be eligible, candidates must: 

  • Be resident in and be a national of an African country. 

  • Have an excellent first degree in mathematics, medical statistics or a very closely related subject.

  • Have at least one year experience of working in Africa as a statistician or epidemiologist and be able to meet English language requirements for study in the UK

  • Be interested in research on the control of chronic diseases.

  • Although the program’s preference is for applicants wishing to study the MSc full-time and face-to-face in London, applicants wishing to study an on-line MSc course will be considered provided they can complete their study and attachment within 3 years.

Benefits:-

The fellowship will provide full tuition fees, stipend, and one return air fare to London and a competitive salary during the 12-month attachment on a scientist scale at the MRC/UVI/LSHTM Uganda Research Unit or NIMR Tanzania.
