Future Learn offers this free online course to develop your academic English skills called “An Intermediate Guide to Writing in English for University Study”, as you will learn about critical analysis, using sources and avoiding plagiarism. In this course, you will expand your English skills and learn extended writing and research skills for producing a thorough and high standard extended essay. You’ll get an introduction to research tools, writing critically and referencing, as well as learning more about the fundamentals like essay structure, proofreading and avoiding plagiarism. This course will last for 5 weeks, with an effort of 3 hours weekly. 

Topics covered:

Week one:

  1. Differentiating between academic writing and other types of writing
  2. Choosing the correct structure for an academic essay
  3. Analyzing essay questions
  4. Activating what you already know about the topic

Week two:

  1. Searching for information as a starting point to build your knowledge
  2. Evaluating resources and reading academic texts
  3. Annotating and surveying information from source texts

Week three:

  1. Components of a paragraph and the notion of paragraph leader
  2. Paragraph development and writing a paragraph

Week four:

  1. Understanding how to use facts, statistics, and research in your writing
  2. Showing critical thinking through the choice of citation type
  3. How to incorporate appropriate evidence
  4. Avoiding plagiarism

Week five:

  1. Writing a plan
  2. Essay introductions and conclusions
  3. Proofreading
  4. Peer support in writing

Who can join this course:

This course is aimed at anyone interested in undertaking academic study in English, but it may be of particular interest to international students. You will require an IELTS English level of 5.5 and above. Whether you’re a prospective undergraduate or postgraduate or are currently undertaking university-level study - this course will build on your ability to research, write and reference essays and extended writing projects.

By the end of the course, you'll be able to:

  1. Assess the difference between academic writing and other types of writing
  2. Identify the different features of an academic essay
  3. Identify appropriate search systems to find reading texts relevant to your topic area
  4. Apply critical reading skills to analyze and evaluate an academic text
  5. Explain why most academic texts are organized into paragraphs
  6. Produce a well-organized, coherent paragraph as part of an academic essay
  7. Identify information from source materials and texts to include in your writing according to the appropriate academic conventions of referencing
