The European Youth Portal is offering a free online course about “Technology and Society: Connections Across Frontiers” in Arabic for students and youth from the Southern Mediterranean and Europe to explore the role that technology plays in our everyday lives and societies. The course will start on 4 November, 2019 and will last for 6 weeks, with a weekly time investment between 5 and 10 hours. Participants will learn from, and with their peers in an interactive, intercultural, online environment and reflect on the societal changes that come with technological developments.

About the course:

Technology has never been as influential as it is today; impacting our personal lives as well as the society we live in. The rapid evolution of technology changes how people interact and build connections; it affects how people receive information, engage with social issues and participate in politics. Technology also shapes the job market, the way people work, get paid and spend their money. In this course participants get the chance to discuss the challenges and opportunities these technological developments pose. Stimulated by materials including bite-sized video lectures and other visual and written materials from expert academics and practitioners, participants exchange ideas and perspectives in weekly, live, online group sessions. These online sessions take place in a customized video-conference room and are led by trained dialogue facilitators. Alongside preparing for the weekly sessions, participants will engage in a collaborative assignment.

  1. Week 1: Setting the Scene
  2. Week 2: Identity in the Digital Era
  3. Week 3: Social Media and Society
  4. Week 4: Digital Media in Activism
  5. Week 5: Digital Economy and the Employment Sector
  6. Week 6: Future innovations

Eligibility criteria:

  1. The course is open to anyone between the age of 18-30 and is a resident in one of the Erasmus+ program countries or Southern Mediterranean countries. 
  2. A basic level of Arabic language skills (B1/2 level) that enables the participant of basic conversations.
  3. Have access to a computer with a webcam and microphone to participate in the online sessions.
  4. Availability for the same 2-hours throughout the whole duration of this 6-week course, to participate in the online sessions.
  5. Have 1-2 hours to invest in various assignments that support you explore the weekly topic.

Learning outcomes:

  1. Knowledge: Students gain a multi-disciplinary understanding of the role that technology plays in modern society. 
  2. Peer-learning: participants will have the opportunity not only to learn about the subject matter from experts but also engage in direct peer-learning by Virtual Exchange.
  3. Cross-cultural competence: Participants build confidence in speaking honestly and respectfully on controversial and complex issues in a cross-cultural environment. Equally, they learn how to listen receptively and value different perspectives. 
  4. Technology: Gain experience in virtual communication and essential technical capabilities and expand their knowledge of the different technological applications available in different sectors.
  5. Language: This course offers an opportunity to improve Arabic language skills for both native and non-native Arabic speakers. This course offers an opportunity to improve public speaking and build confidence for Arabic speakers with different levels. 
  6. Transversal skills: Students who participate in Interactive Open online Courses develop a set of skills that are considered highly valuable to employment, academic achievement and personal growth. These competencies include increased self-esteem, curiosity, tolerance of ambiguity, decisiveness and resilience.
