Opportunity description

The Chatham House is offering Asfari research fellowships for potential leaders from around the world at the Queen Elizabeth II Academy for Leadership in International Affairs in London. The fellowship will be split into 3 key areas: completing a personal research project of the fellow’s own design with the guidance of an expert, contributing to the ongoing research activities of the host research team and other teams, and participating in the academy’s Leadership Program. The Leadership Program includes an intensive induction week to become familiarized with the elements of the fellowship, weekly discussion seminars to highlight the principal and substantive areas that are vital to the academy, meeting with leaders and senior decision-makers from different sectors, leadership workshops, personal development coaching, and media training. Fellows have the option to have external and independent career mentors during their fellowship.

Research topics for the 2018-2019 fellowship are: [1] Research topics with the Middle East and North Africa Program that discuss cross-border dynamics and transnational movements, the deep state in conflict regions and its implications for post-war reconstruction and civil society, and prospects for non-state actors in the Middle East, and [2] Research topics with the Centre on Global Health Security that discuss the rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the Middle East and healthcare conflict.

Applicants must:

[1] Be citizens of Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine or Syria or displaced citizens of these countries living elsewhere in the Middle East. Holders of a dual nationality, which includes one of the countries previously mentioned, are also eligible to apply.

[2] Be holders of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, and a master’s degree with an international focus is preferred.

[3] Be at the mid-stage of their career in academia, NGOs, business, government departments, civil society or the media.

[4] Have an interest in or knowledge of one of the policy-related challenges mentioned in the research topics.

The academy will provide a monthly stipend of £2,228, in addition to a provision made for the costs of relocation, fieldwork, and possible publication costs. Fellows will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge, skills, network and self-awareness, which they can draw upon in their future careers as effective leaders in their field.
