Opportunity description
The Center for Creativity, Design, and the Arts, a partnership between Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA) and Sweet Briar College, seeks two artists to teach an interdisciplinary, collaborative three-week course on the use of technology in the creation of art, including conceptual, visual, or performance art, during Sweet Briar’s three-week short session in the Spring 2020. Compensation includes a fully-funded four-week residency at VCCA to overlap with the course dates and a stipend of $5,000.
Course Description:
- This course, “Experiments in Art & Technology,” will cover the ways in which artists, scientists, and engineers have used technology to create innovative works of art across the mediums. It will explore the forerunners of the movement and introduce students to iconic examples of early collaborations, such as those between artists Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Whitman and engineers Billy Klüver and Fred Waldhauer.
- Students will become familiar with the social and political questions and concerns resonating within the intersection of art and technology, and explore the divides and bridges between man and machine.
- The course includes both the study and practice of art, and the instructor will work with students to create individual and/or collaborative work/s of art.
Responsibilities:
- Make the course innovative, immersive and hands-on.
- Be actively engaged with students for a minimum of three hours a day, five days a week for the three-week period.
- Teaching students who have no previous experience in the arts.
Benefits:
A fully-funded four-week residency at VCCA to overlap with the course dates and a stipend of $5,000.
