The University of Witwatersrand’s School of Public health in South Africa, in cooperation with the Special Program for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) hosted at the World Health Organization in Geneva, invites qualified students to apply for a full scholarship to undertake a full-time master’s degree in the field of Implementation Science for 18 months. The degree program is open to students from a range of disciplines including clinical and other health related fields; statistics and other quantitative fields, as well as demography and social sciences.
Implementation research is a growing field that supports the identification of health system bottlenecks and approaches to address them, and is particularly useful in low- and middle-income countries where many health interventions don’t reach those who need them. The goal of strengthening capacity in implementation research on infectious diseases of poverty (in particular, the neglected tropical diseases, malaria and tuberculosis) and boosting the number of researchers and practitioners in low and middle-income countries in line with the training’s focus on improving the health of people burdened by infectious diseases through research and innovation.
Applicants must:
[1] Be residents in and nationals of a low- or middle-income country in the WHO African Region4
[2] Be 35 or younger, and women are encouraged to apply
[3] Be interested in developing a career in implementation research on infectious diseases of poverty
[4] Be proficient in English
[5] Meet the Program’s requirements:
- A four-year honors degree
- A Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBCh) or other health related degree
- Relevant work experience will be an advantage
- Students can come from various disciplinary backgrounds including medical, microbiology, dentistry, statistics, veterinary science and demography
