Fully Funded Research Fellowship in Public Health 2018

Wellcome offers PhD holders with a significant research experience in basic and clinical public health to apply for the Senior Research Fellowship which is a leading research program for up to 7 years and can be renewed for up to 5 years. The fellowship may be held on a part-time basis. Researchers are expected to spend about 80% of their time on research-related activities, and the rest of their time can be spent on other activities, such as clinical commitments, teaching or administration. 

Requirements include:

[1] Applicants must have a higher degree (PhD or equivalent) and significant research experience

[2] Applicants’ work must be important, original and has an impact

[3] Applicants must show that they have made important contributions to their area of research (publications, patents, software development or an impact on health policy or practice)

[4] Commitment to developing and mentoring less experienced researchers

[5] Applicants must have sponsorship from a head of department or equivalent at an eligible host organization which must be located in either the UK, the Republic of Ireland or a low or middle income country (nationals of low or middle income countries have the third option)

All research proposals must:

[1] Be within the science remit

[2] Describe an innovative and ambitious program of work

[3] Explain the approaches that will be used to deliver that program of work

[4] Be distinct from activities already supported by other awards

[5] If you are a national of a low or middle income country and you propose to work in one of those countries, your research proposal must also focus on health priority in that country

Selection will be made based on the research contributions, the importance of the research questions, the feasibility of the proposal and the suitability of the research environment. Wellcome will fund the total cost of the researcher’s salary for the entire period, and he/she can ask for visa costs to help take up the post at the host organization. It will also provide researchers with a fellowship supplement of £12,500 a year for their personal support, as well as the extra employer’s contributions needed to cover the supplement. Research expenses such as materials, fieldwork expenses, research management, travel costs, publication costs etc. are covered.
