Are you interested in open science and data? Are you a professional researcher who would like to influence the future of science and data sharing within your community?
Mozilla is a global non-profit that gathers researchers, developers, and librarians making research open and accessible. They are empowering open science leaders through fellowships, mentorships and project-based learning. Mozilla’s mission is to ensure that the Internet is a global public resource, open and accessible to all.
The Mozilla Science Lab invites researchers from around the world who are passionate for open source and data sharing who are eager to advance openness in science and data within their institutions and already working to shift research practice to be more collaborative and open, to apply for the funded Mozilla fellowships for science 2018-2019. The fellowship focuses on physical, natural, social, and library sciences of all scientific disciplines. Fellows will spend 10 months, starting from September 2018, as community catalysts mentoring the next generation of open data practitioners and researchers building an everlasting change in the global open science community. They are also encouraged to continue their personal research for up to 20% of their time during the course of their fellowship.
Applicants must:
[1] Be currently based at a research institution
[2] Be an early-career researcher (i.e., graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, research scientists, lecturers)
[3] Specialize in scientific research: physical, life, social, library or natural sciences
[4] Be able to travel
[5] Obtain support from their advisors while being based at their home institutions and a letter of support from their advisor is also mandatory for consideration of the application
Applicants are expected to:
[1] Change within their university or other institution around open source and data sharing
[2] Create code, curriculum and other learning resources that help others learn about open science practices
[3] Practice in Mozilla workweeks, trainings and community events (MozFest, Global Sprint, Working Open Workshops, etc.)
[4] Participate in and help lead regular community events and be mentors and leaders within their own communities
[5] Communicate and share their work openly on an ongoing basis (e.g., through GitHub repositories, scholarly preprints and blog posts)
The fellowship offers a base stipend of $60,000 paid in 10 monthly installments, and fellows will be responsible for remitting all applicable taxes and other government payments as required. To help offset cost of living, the fellowship also provides supplements for childcare and health insurance, and helps pay for research equipment and books. Costs of required travel for fellowship activities are also covered. In addition to that, fellows will receive training and support to hone their skills around open source, data sharing, open science policy and licensing. They will also craft learning resources that will help their local communities learn more about open data practices.
