Opportunity description

The University of Edinburgh is offering a funded three-month Visiting Postdoctoral Fellowship in Modern and Contemporary History for 2018-2019, which aims to encourage outstanding early-career interdisciplinary research and scholarly collaboration in the broad field of modern and contemporary history. The fellow will be affiliated with the Center for the Study of Modern and Contemporary History in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology and the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (CSMCH-IASH). This year, the CSMCH selected 'Space' as an interdisciplinary research theme which applicants will need to follow in their research, showing that it falls within the “modern and contemporary” period (c. 1750-present). The fellow will be expected to:

[1] Present his/her work to CSMCH seminar and to IASH, as well as take part in sessions and other community activities

[2] Organize one event in collaboration with the CSMCH which could be a lecture, a film etc. or an academic event, and both the Center and the Institute will be able to help by providing small amounts of funding where appropriate

[3] Work with a mentor from the School of History, Classics and Archaeology

Eligibility:

[1] Applicants must have been successfully awarded a PhD by the time they apply and must be within 7 years of the award, not including career breaks. Consideration will be given to the academic record and the publications as well as the capacity to disseminate their views among a community of like-minded people

[2] Applicants must explain how their proposed research fits in with the theme ‘Space’

[3] Applicants must choose a member of the School of History, Classics and Archaeology to collaborate with before applying, and name the mentor in the application form

[4] Applicants are expected to be resident in Edinburgh throughout the entire period of the fellowship and to play a full part in the activities

[5] No regular teaching is required but fellows will give at least one seminar at IASH and one to the CSMCH on their current research work

Benefits:

Fellows will benefit from the combined resources of the School of History, Classics and Archaeology and IASH. The fellowship comes with a stipend of £1,100 per month (for three months) and up to £500 to offset travel expenses. It is anticipated that fellows will use the fellowship to launch joint publications, joint applications for research funding and/or collaborative research projects with their mentor and/or other members.
