Opportunity description

DATA4CHANGE invites applicants to take part in its five-day residential workshop in Nairobi in Kenya between 30 May - 3 June 2019. The workshop offers a full immersion into the inner workings of a data visualization studio. CSOs and NGOs working on some of the world’s most pressing social and political problems are matched with carefully selected teams of industry experts covering the disciplines of data analysis, journalism, graphic design, and web development.

At the end of the event, each team has a proof of concept or fully rendered prototype for a data-driven advocacy campaign, and the wealth of immeasurable experience that comes along with spending five days together with a diverse and uniquely talented group of individuals.

Themes

Through a competitive process that begins with this open call for applications, DATA4CHANGE will select four CSOs or NGOs working on themes relating to digital rights and internet freedom to participate in D4C Nairobi.

Suggested thematic areas include, but are no means limited to:

  • Censorship, shutdowns, obstacles to free access.
  • Innovation, free and open source software.
  • Privacy, surveillance, encryption.
  • Legislation and policy concerning the internet, press freedom, privacy, access.
  • Governance of the internet, net neutrality.
  • Protection and realisation of human rights online.

Eligibility Criteria

[1] Your proposal must cover at least one of the following countries:

  • East Africa – Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda.
  • Southern Africa – Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe.
  • West Africa – Gambia, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone.
  • Middle East & Central Asia – Afghanistan, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Sudan.

[2] If you are considering applying, please discuss your application with your colleagues prior to submission, as we only accept one application per organisation per event. It is very important that your organisation supports your participation. If you make it through to the final round of the selection process, DATA4CHANGE will work with you to identify a second suitable participant from your organisation, as all selected CSOs are offered two places at the event.

[3] Attending DATA4CHANGE requires you to invest a significant time commitment, as you will need to be able to attend the full 5 days of the event (plus any additional travel time), and take part in the pre-event preparations.

Benefits

  1. Full scholarship for you and a colleague to attend the workshop, including travel, accommodation, and in-country costs.
  2. Experience working with talented industry professionals on a data driven project guided by you.
  3. Learn how to tell stories with data.

Applications to attend DATA4CHANGE are reviewed by a board of advisors and the competition is very tough. If you are accepted, you and a colleague will receive a full scholarship to attend the event.
