Opportunity description

TWAS and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) offer collaborative research grants in the fields of sustainability science, such as agriculture, education, energy, climate, water, etc. Two groups of scientists from eligible countries are formed to study a common problem and find solutions. One of the two groups must be based in the least developed country. The application must be filled in by Principal Investigator 1 (PI1); where one PI is not from a least developed country. In cases where both PIs are from least developed countries, either one may submit the form. The PI submitting the form will be responsible for inserting correct information for both parties.

Grant Amount and Duration:

The grant amounts to a maximum of USD 50,000 per group – USD 100,000 total per grant. A grant is provided for a period of 24 months. The program will choose one project per year.

Research Areas:

The Research Grants program provides support for research projects in the following fields:

  • Sustainable Agriculturesuch as Food security and land agrobiodiversity
  • Education such as quality of teaching and pupil/teacher ratio.
  • Education for Sustainable Development 
  • Climate Change such as strategies for reduction of CO2 emissions.
  • Energy such as solar and wind energy.
  • Sustainable cities such as insulation technology and urban planning.
  • Responsible growth such as serving communities.
  • Waste management such as recycling.
  • Population growth such as Urban sprawl, density, and epidemics.
  • Green chemistry such as nanotechnology.
  • Biodiversity
  • Plastic pollution and Micro-plastics
  • Water and hygiene such as water purity and availability and desalination technologies.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Each Principle Investigator (PI) must be a national of an IsDB member country and hold a Ph.D. with good research experience and lead each research group.  (Note: The PI will be responsible for the coordination of the research, submission of requested documentation and reporting of the expenses. All TWAS correspondence will be with each PI).
  2. One PI MUST be from an IsDB Least Developed Member Country and the other from any of the eligible IsDB member countries.
  3. Each member of the group should operate in a university or research institution in one of the IsDB member countries and should be represented in the proposal by a PI. Note: No age limit is applied to the applicant.
  4. Applications from women scientists are especially encouraged.
  5. Individual young scientists or leaders of research units currently holding a TWAS Research Grant in the Basic Sciences are not eligible.
