Opportunity description

The International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) is an intergovernmental organization, and it is a part of the United Nations system. The center became fully autonomous in 1994, and it has over 60 member states. ICGEB provides a scientific and educational environment of the highest standards, and conducts innovative research in life sciences for the benefit of developing countries. The center aids the research capability of its country members through training and funding programs, and advisory services. The Centre is dedicated to advanced research and training in molecular biology and biotechnology.

ICGEB is offering a Research grant program for researchers from state members, who are willing to work on an outstanding research project. ICGEB Research Grants are aimed at financing projects addressing original scientific problems of particular relevance for the host country and of regional interest. The grant program aims to promote training of young scientists and to facilitate the creation of appropriate research facilities. The program provides support for research projects in basic science, human healthcare, industrial and agricultural biotechnology and bioenergy.

Applicants for research grant proposals (Also known as CRP,) should hold positions at Universities or Research Institutes in any of the ICGEB Member States. Special attention will be given to projects addressing issues of interest for specific geographic regions, and presented by groups collaborating across more than one country.
An important element of successful applications is the feasibility of the proposed project within the designated time-frame (maximum 36 months). A special category of CRP-ICGEB Early Career Return Grants is intended to fund young researchers, eligible applicants are:

[2] Should be no more than 40 years of age at the time of application.

[3] Have returned to an ICGEB Member State no more than 2 years prior to submitting the application.

Successful applicants will receive grants to do their scientific research projects. The maximum annual contribution from ICGEB is Euro 25,000, and funds can only be used to support research activity in the laboratory of the Principal Researcher. The funds may be used in the following four budget categories:

[1] Equipment: It is to be spent preferably during the first year of the project for the purchase of basic standard laboratory equipment and/or components that are necessary for the implementation of the research project. This budget category must not exceed 30% of the total grant awarded.

[2] Consumables items (e.g. general laboratory supplies, tissue culture reagents, chemicals) needed to carry out the proposed research.

[3] Short-term training visits and local travel costs (maximum 3 months per project subject to prior approval from ICGEB): This budget category is for scientists directly involved in the project for hands-on training related to the project. This budget category must not exceed 10% of the total grant awarded.

[4] Literature: Funds may be used to cover purchasing costs of scientific literature and reference material (e.g., books, subscription to journals and periodicals).
