The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) is an academy that aims for the advancement of science in developing countries through its scholarships and fellowships. This includes the new annual prize “Samira Omar Innovation for Sustainability Prize”, which was named after the TWAS Fellow Samira Omar. This prize is seeking to reach scientists from the least developed countries.
The prize of 2018 is focused on plastic, including its degradation, pollution and the microplastics. The “ Innovation for Sustainability” prize will be awarded to the scientists who are contributing in the fields of sustainability, who were living and working in one of the least developed countries during the last two years immediately prior to his/her nomination, those countries include: Comoros, Djibouti, Mauritania, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen.

[3] A supporting statement by the nominator
The scientists will be awarded with $4,000 generously provided by Professor Omar. The prize will honor scientists working in an area relevant to sustainability, based on scientific achievements in the thematic area of plastic including degradation, pollution and micro plastics.
