Opportunity description

Katara invites poets from all over the world to participate in Katara Prize for Prophet’s Poet for 2019, which is the first religious cultural activity organized in the Arab world. The contest aims to select the best participants who will be shining with the best poems, words and verses, using all the poetic tools and various styles and structures of the Arabic language to improve the poetic sense and reach the finest aesthetics of poetry that is specialized in the praise of the prophet Muhammad. 

Contestcategories:

  1. Literary Arabic poetry
  2. Nabati (vernacular) poetry

Contest rules:

  1. Participation is open to poets from all over the world from the age of 20 years and above
  2. The poet can only participate with one poem
  3. The poem has to be new, and specially written for this award
  4. The poem has to contain 30 verses
  5. The theme of the poem must be the praise of the prophet peace be upon him and his biography
  6. The poem should not have been published through print, visual or audio medium, or took part in various events or media
  7. The poem must not have won any other awards 
  8. The poem must be composed by the participant, and must not be quoted as the poet bears full literal and legal responsibility
  9. The poet must be present in the final round to deliver his/her poem (without reading)

Selection criteria:

The first phase:

  1. Readable text: 60% of the final grade, taking into account imagination and creativity, poetic image, poetic dictionary, rhythm and title of the poem
  2. Audio text: 40% of the final grade, taking into account how fine the recitation is, the embodiment of the meaning and comprehension of the text

The second phase: 

  1. Readable and audible text: 50% of the mark obtained in the first phase
  2. The test: 50%, as 5 candidates will be given 2 verses of a famous poem in praise of the prophet and they are required to build on it another 5 verses from their composition in a period that does not exceed 30 minutes

Final phase:

The committee announces the 3 winners. 

Prize:

  1. Literary Arabic poetry: Three prizes will be given to the winners. The first winner will receive 1,000,000 Qatari riyal, the second winner will receive 700,000 Qatari riyal and the third winner will receive 400,000 Qatari riyal. The total amount of the prize in this category will be 2,000,000 Qatari riyal. 
  2. Nabati poetry: Three prizes will be given to the winners. The first winner will receive 1,000,000 Qatari riyal, the second winner will receive 700,000 Qatari riyal and the third winner will receive 400,000 Qatari riyal. The total amount of the prize in this category will be 2,000,000 Qatari riyal.


In addition to that, Katara will print and publish the poems and use them in other production projects while retaining the rights of the cultural foundation, as well as record and produce a CD for the winners at Katara Studios.
