Opportunity description

The LLM/MPhil in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa is a prestigious one-year intensive course where 25 30 exceptional individuals spend 6 months in Pretoria and 6 months at one of the 13 partner universities all over Africa. They are taught by eminent lecturers in the field of human rights and undergo many practical training exercises. It is the only course of its kind in Africa. Graduates become members of the HRDA Alumni Association whose 482 members are currently active in the full spectrum of human rights work: from grassroots, through civil service, to international organisations including the African Union and the United Nations.

The LLM/MPhil in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa is a unique program to which 25 to 30 applicants from African countries with the following degrees and preferably experience in the field of human rights are admitted:

[1] :Law students A degree allowing access to the legal profession (LLB or licence en droit).

[2] Other students: At least an Honors degree in a discipline relevant to human rights and democratization.

Note: There are up to 25 full scholarships available for African citizens.

The main objectives of the LLM/MPhil program are:

[1] To train human rights experts who can be employed in government ministries, other national, international and regional bodies concerned with human rights and democracy.

[2] Expand collaboration among African universities.

[3] Develop relationship between the African Masters and the other regional masters.

Applicants must:

[1] Be individuals from all African countries.

[2] Be in possession of a first degree in Law (LLB, licence en droit or licenciatura em direito) or an Honours degree relevant to human rights and democratisation.

The following documents will be requested when during your application:

[1] Previous academic records/transcripts.

[2] Previous degree certificate(s).

[3] Copy of bio-data page of passport.

[4] A good quality photograph of yourself.

[5] For applicants who did not obtain their qualifications in English: TOEFL, SAT1 or IELTS Test certificate.
