Opportunity description

NASA’s Project Mars invites artists from all around the world to participate in its International Art and Film Contest for 2018 to help NASA build a flexible, reusable and sustainable infrastructure that enable missions to Mars. Orion is NASA’s new spacecraft that will take astronauts to the Moon and beyond to make new discoveries about our solar system and unlock the mysteries of our own planet Earth.

You can participate by:

[1] Shooting a film: Bring your interpretation of NASA’s work to send humans to Mars through breathtaking cinematography, animations, and state-of-the-art special effects. In 5 minutes, tell an inspiring story about a 9-month trek to the Red Planet. The winning short film will be selected by a team of film and graphic design industry judges including Gareth Edwards, director of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Film specifications:

  • Videos can be submitted as private Vimeo or YouTube links
  • Duration: 2 to 5 minutes
  • Resolution: 1920x1080
  • Frame rates: 29.97, 24, or 25
  • Bitrate: 20Mbs
  • Codec: H.264
  • Sound Codec: AAC-LC
  • Audio sample rate: 48 KHz
  • Audio bitrate: 320 kbps

[2] Making a poster: Recruit brave astronauts for a daring mission, promote space tourism for the adventurous, or depict the next generation of space systems that will transport new world explorers to Mars. The sky is not the limit when you design a poster for the deep space journey, so reach out to infinity and beyond for creative ideas. The winning poster will be selected by a team of film and graphic design industry judges including Joshua Grossberg, creative director of McCann New York.

Poster specifications:

  • Posters should be submitted as PDF Files optimized for on-screen viewing

Prizes:

Three prizes will be awarded in the film category: One Grand prize of $10,000 and 2 Judge’s prize of $5,000.
