Opportunity description

The Kroc Institute is offering a PhD scholarship program at the Kroc Institute to empower students to become outstanding scholars and teachers who contribute to a growing body of peacebuilding knowledge and practice with the goal of addressing violence and alleviating human suffering. All admitted students receive a full tuition scholarship, Living stipend, health insurance and additional funding for conference travel and research activities.

Eligibility criteria

  • Applicants must hold at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  •  Doctoral students are required to:
  1. Take a minimum of 6 required Peace Studies courses taught by Kroc Institute faculty as well as required Departmental courses, preferably with content relevant to peace studies,
  2. Submit an article to a peer-reviewed scholarly journal to be considered for publication,
  3. Submit applications for external funding for doctoral research,
  4. Complete a teaching assistantship in "Introduction to Peace Studies,"
  5. Complete foundational research or teaching assistantships with Kroc Institute faculty or fellows engaged in scholarship related to the Institute's research themes,
  6. Meet course requirements and pass a comprehensive exam in one partner Department as well as in Peace Studies,
  7. Conduct dissertation research and writing under the guidance of Kroc faculty and fellows, and 
  8. Pass a foreign language exam (for students whose first language is English).

  • Statement of intent: 
  1. (maximum 1,000 words) 
  2. should describe your areas of interest and experience as explicitly as possible and list the faculty with whom you wish to study. 
  • Writing sample:
  1. should demonstrate your skills in writing, analysis, and peace research. 
  2. It should represent your best sample of academic writing. 
  3. If you send part of a longer work (for example, a senior or master’sthesis), please include an abstract of no more than 250 words describing the whole piece and its argument.
  • Three recommendations
  • A TOEFL or IELTS score
  • Transcripts
