Opportunity description
The University of Newcastle invites PhD students who are interested in oncology, dementia or e-health to apply for scholarships at the Health Behavior Research Collaborative which is located at the Hunter Medical Research Institute for 2018. The Collaborative conducts research across a variety of health areas including disease prevention, screening, chronic disease, psychosocial care, and end-of-life care. It has a strong interest in developing robust outcome measures, describing the prevalence and determinants of health problems and testing strategies to improve quality of health. The scholarships are available for students to work within the following programs:
[1] Improving the quality of cancer care
[2] Testing strategies to address challenges faced by people with dementia and their careers
[3] Using e-health to improve health outcomes of older adults
Eligibility criteria:
[1] Applicants must have had training in behavioural science, medicine (including oncology and geriatric medicine), health behaviour, social science, public health, epidemiology, psychology, nursing or other allied health professions
[2] Applicants are expected to have a basic understanding of quantitative statistical methods or be willing to work toward this through completion of coursework or self-directed learning during their candidature
[3] Applicants are expected to enrol on a full-time basis, and the university requires that full-time scholarship holders do not undertake paid employment of more than eight hours per week, Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Scholarship holders may undertake additional paid employment outside of these hours
[4] PhD students will be expected to contribute to the development and day-to-day management of the study or studies that relate to their PhD via membership of the study working group
[5] Each student must have at least two supervisors, with the primary supervisor based at the University of Newcastle. Selection of other academic or clinical supervisors will depend on the successful applicant’s background and experience
Benefits:
Students will receive $27,082 per annum (2018 rate) indexed annually. The living allowance scholarship is for 3.5 years and the tuition fee scholarship is for four years. Scholarships also include up to $1,500 relocation allowance and Overseas Student Health Cover at a single rate, for an international applicant.
