Opportunity description

The International Development Research Center (IDRC) offers a number of research awards providing a unique opportunity to enhance research skills and gain a fresh perspective on crucial development issues. These one‐year paid, in‐house programs of training and mentorship allow research award recipients to pursue their research goals and work in one of IDRC’s dynamic program teams. IDRC is considered a strategically important partner in Canada’s international research development. It delivers services to the Centre in four areas: strategic scanning, analysis, and advice; federal liaison and coordination; strategic and annual planning and reporting; and evaluation.

Specifications of the Required Research Proposals:

  1. Explore current practice in knowledge translation with specific relevance to research funding and support organizations such as IDRC, for example, activities, initiatives, systems, theories, and/or frameworks that aim to strengthen knowledge translation results and culture. 
  2. knowledge translation holds a purposefully comprehensive connotation. It includes activities related to the synthesis, exchange, sharing, and ethical application of research-generated knowledge. 
  3. Address issues in Canadian foreign affairs and development policy that are relevant to IDRC.
  4. Focus on evaluation and learning approaches relevant to IDRC programming.

Eligibility and Requirements:

  1. Canadians or permanent residents of Canada who are enrolled in a master’s or a doctoral degree at a recognized university or have completed (within the last three years) a master's or doctoral degree at a recognized university.
  2. Citizens of a developing country who are enrolled in a master’s or a doctoral degree at a Canadian university or have completed (within the last three years) a master's or doctoral degree at a recognized university. In either case, applicants must already have a work permit valid for full-time work (37.5 hours per week) in Canada until December 31, 2020, prior to applying.
  3. The proposed research must focus on one or more developing countries.
  4. The specific eligibility criteria for each research theme must be satisfied.
  5. Citizens of the following countries aren’t allowed to participate: Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Mali, North Korea, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria, Yemen, southern and eastern Europe, Central Asia, and South Caucasus.

Personal Qualifications:

  1. Demonstrated professional interest in knowledge translation, public policy and/or evaluation.
  2. Knowledge of issues in international development.
  3. Strong research, analytical, and writing skills.
  4. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  5. Good judgment, initiative, and ability to set priorities and organize work.
  6. Applicants must be fluent in either English or French.
  7. Proficiency in a second official language (English or French) would be an asset.
