Opportunity description

The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) is a global science academy in Italy that works for the advancement of science in developing countries. It supports sustainable prosperity through research, education, policy and diplomacy, supports excellence in scientific research, and responds to the need of young scientists in countries that are lagging in science and technology. The Academy distributes more than 1 million dollars in research grants every year to individual scientists and research groups. It also supports visiting scientists and provides funding for regional and international science meetings.

TWAS in cooperation with Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation of the OIC (COMSTECH) is offering young scientists in countries belonging to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) the opportunity to receive TWAS-COMSTECH Joint Research Grants that enable them to purchase facilities that enhance their productivity. The program aims to encourage the pursuit of scientific excellence by promoting research and strengthening the capacity in science and technology. Grants are awarded for 18 months to high-level research projects in Earth Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Information Technology and Computer Sciences, Materials Science including Nanotechnology, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Renewable Energy.

Applicants must:

[1] Be individuals or research groups and nationals of OIC member states

[2] Be holders of PhD with some research experience but at the beginning of their careers

[3] Hold positions at universities or research institutions in one of the OIC countries

[4] Be under the age of 40

A written agreement is made between TWAS, the grantee and his/her institute. The institute undertakes to administer the grant according to the agreement and to provide laboratory space, salaries and other facilities necessary for the project. Equipment, consumables and literature provided for the project through the COMSTECH-TWAS Joint Research Grants Program remain the property of the institute after the project is completed.

A research grant amounts to a maximum of $15,000. This may be used to purchase scientific equipment, consumables and specialized literature (textbooks and proceedings only), but does not cover salaries of researchers and/or students, field expenses, travel expenses and/or participation in international conferences. The assignment meetings of the research grants committees will be held by February 2019, and applicants will be notified of the outcome shortly after the meeting. Awardees are required to submit a final report within one year of receipt of the last items purchased.
